Village Underground Mural
London, New York, Berlin. These are the cities I can instantly think of where many things are happening in the street art world. London always been a pioneer. Before the International street art and graffiti festivals popped up in large numbers, many artists visited London to paint here and to enjoy the exposure they get out of it. We have quite a lot of talented artists living in the UK. One of the best urban artists, Dale Grimshaw, recently completed a stunning mural. The Village Underground wall is the biggest legal surface in East London, spreading 7.5 metres tall and 16 metres wide. Village Underground in a renovated warehouse which serves as a creative and community hub in Shoreditch. Their wall is being painted since 2007, when it wasn’t commonplace that people paint in bigger scale, let alone legally.
Dale Grimshaw comes from a fine art background. He’s been painting outdoors (with spray-paint) for the past eight years and won over a brand new legion of people who love street art, while Dale stays true his aesthetics perfected in his studio. He painted the Village Underground wall last year and the venue asked him to come back this year. To date he is the only artist who painted this surface twice. Since the size of the wall and given the fact that popular artists have busy schedules, Dale allocated five days to paint the surface. He only had two days to use a lift and paint the upper part of the wall. The work is based on one of his recent canvases, entitled ‘Ophelia’ which was part of his recent exhibition at Wallery Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden. The mural was completed a week ago and received loads of love from people in the area. Possibly one of the most ‘Instagramable’ surfaces in the area in the moment. The venue plans to leave the work there until the middle of August, when it will be covered by another local/national/international talent.
You can find the mural at East London at 54 Holywell Lane, EC2A 3PQ. Nearest stations: Old Street tube or Shoreditch overground stations.
